Boho Touchstones: Where a family in need is nominated and honored by having a custom order created as a wearable heirloom for their little to enjoy for always.

This is Paisley, a courageous 8 year old who’s story not only touched my heart, but the lives of all who surround her. She was nominated by a family friend, and I thank this family dearly for sharing their story and allowing  me to be a part of it!

“Dear Kristen,
I would like to nominate Paisley Kavanaugh for your Touchstone Gift Honoree. She and her parents have had unthinkable tribulations surrounding Paisley’s health over the last 2 years.
After repeated incidents of young Paisley having days of headaches, nausea and vomiting, in 4 months, there was still no diagnosis or relief from doctors or natural remedies. They continued to seek the cause of this relentless pain until one day she collapsed and had to be rushed to the emergency room where an alarming seizure had left her eerily unresponsive.
There a CT scan discovered a large mass in her brain which was soon after removed by a neurosurgeon, leaving this 8 year old girl with a scar going almost from ear to ear on the top of her head like a headband. The tumor is a rare one, called Craniopharyngioma, which affects the pituitary gland. She spent 2 weeks in the hospital and her recovery was long and hard for her, her mom and dad. They have been doing MRI’s every 3 months for the past year to make sure that the tumor was completely removed.
Sadly, her most recent MRI, just a few weeks from Paisley’s 10th birthday, revealed a new tumor had grown in place of the old. It is unknown yet, what will be done to prevent this tumor’s growth, it may mean chemo and/or radiation this time around.
Paisley is a sweet, caring young lady with an impressive smile and selfless attitude. She even wrote a book sharing her perspective of what happened to her. The idea being that she could give this to other kids at the Children’s Hospital so that they might not be so scared. Did I mention she was only 8 years old when this happened? She’s years ahead of me!
Please consider Paisley for her courage and resiliency. I think her and her parents would love one of your beautiful designs made just for her. It would be something bright and even comforting for Paisley to wear, especially if you can combine contributions from her parents. She could wear it like a badge of honor, a reminder of her family’s strength and love for each other and most of all Paisley.”

Very truly yours, Amy Weaver

So the Kavanaugh’s sent in a few sentimental pieces from both their closets for me to use for Paisley’s one of a kind design.

and the three tops were then up cycled into a fun and colorful Boho Dress just like Paisleys personality!

It means so much to me, that this little girl can feel pretty and be comforted by being clothed in textiles of her parents. A wearable heirloom, a fabricated memory in time.

Do you have someone you know, or possibly it is yourself, who has faced some overwhelming challenges and would cherish having a fabrication sentimental to them repurposed into a wearable heirloom for their little?

Simply send in an email titled “Boho Touchstones Honoring” of why you believe this family would be a good match for our Boho Touchstones program, along with a photo of them, and we will gift a new family every other month. This family will send in an item they would like repurposed and I will custom create a one of a kind wearable heirloom for the little in their life.

sincerely ~ Kristen Saylor

How I enjoyed this custom drawer to drawer order … let me count the ways! When a long time friend of mine wanted me to create a few pieces for her newborn daughter Pricilla, utilizing pieces near and dear from the whole families wardrobe,  I was overjoyed and immediately inspired! Not only did this mama have a country liking, but her totally rocking outlook on life and fond friendship memories made me want to create something as significant for her gal as the name Pricilla itself holds!

When she sent me down a few pieces to up-cycle from, including the most awesome country western shirts her daddy & brothers all wore, I knew these pieces were truly going to be wearable heirlooms for them. Nothing more then a totally country rock dress would do for this little gal and so that is where my inspiration began. She is sweet enough to share a little testimony of her experience as well…enjoy!

“I love seeing all the beautiful pieces you create. Cant wait to see what you come up with for Pricilla. These are special shirts for a drawer to drawer prairie dress, as well as a couple of outfits she has outgrown, a shirt both of her big brothers have outgrown, and one of my shirts to use. I know that each one of the drawer to drawer pieces is created with such thought and care,  I cant wait to see what is made for Pricilla. Most of all I cant wait for her to have something to wear, made from a piece of clothing from each of the most important people in her life ”

love, Yvonne

And off we go, desert bound again, this time to Ocotillo Wells just outside of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Being 32 weeks pregnant I have to admit I felt a little , well a lot, less resilient this time adventuring but this trip was meant for more moderate hikes and dirt bikes and such (= That being said, my husband may or may not have come home the day before we left with a PW50 for Rhylin that had him smiling like a little girl. He has grown up riding dirt bikes all his life, and always invisioned sharing his passion for this sport with his children. Being that he is having two girls, I think this is most awesome to watch the dynamic of this joy be shared between him and his babies.

I mean seriously on this photo, are you kidding me with both of them smiling and waving! She took to it pretty well too, learning how to “crack the throttle” and “vroom vroom” her way across the desert floor in her new hot pink moto gear. I even hopped on the back for her to take me for a ride as well. Its funny, Im not sure if her personality is just building or if it is already engrained in her weather or not she will be a girly girl or tomboyish. I mean don’t get me wrong, she LOVES her princesses and ponies and such, but I think there is also this side of her we hope to help cultivate and nuture as she grows that enjoys just getting dirty and sweaty and enjoying the elements outdoors. I for sure saw it on this trip… a bravery I wasnt 100% sure she had when she wanted to ride Daddy’s bike with the big boys! Ahhh a girl after my own heart I thought…

IMG_6794The next day was a break from the bikes and foot bound to a place we had ventured about 5 years before, but was just as spectaccular the second time around. Its an archeologists wonderland, and there are often times camps and researchers out there studying the canyon walls as it really makes you feel like you have stepped back into the prehistoric era when walking through these washes. Elephant Knees, the mountain off to the left in this photo stands tall an looks like literally a row of elephants standing knee to knee. We hiked up to the wind caves, which made for some amazing photo opportunities as we had remembered.

IMG_6766IMG_6820IMG_6825IMG_3105Then the next day called for more adventuring of a different kind, as if dirt bikes and canyon hikes weren’t enough … dad really wanted to test out a Razor for Nana, Papa and me to ride. I thought for sure my uber preggo belly wouldn’t fit in a 4 point harness seatbelt, nor be able to go over this bumpy desert terrain …. so Im thinking “alrighty, 5 miles an hour in this thing isn’t going to be all that exciting for me.” Well…I was wrong. Suprisingly enough, the suspension on these things are incredible and it was more comfortable and less bumpy then riding in my husbands F250! So I rode…yes I rode, and I drove… yes I drove it, definatly faster then 5 miles an hour! We all took turns (=

IMG_6925IMG_6953IMG_6937

Yes, yes you are seeing this right … my husband and his best friend (Rhylin’s godfather) riding with their babies. Rhylin on my hubbies bike, and Hogan (the long haired little doggy) on Josh’s. We also were accompanied by the brightest fullest moon that last night that that turned the desert night into an experience all in itself. Glow in the dark Bocci Ball p.s. is a must get for those sundown nightly happenings! I didn’t get a chance to take pictures of it, but it was great for family fun around the campsite.
